General terms and conditions
These terms and conditions apply to any work done for the Client (you) by me (Sarah Barter Proofreading). The contract of service requires that the Client and I both acknowledge, in writing, that we have read, understood and agreed to these terms and conditions.
The Client is under no obligation to offer me work; neither am I under any obligation to accept work offered by the Client.
I will provide a proofreading/editing service as mutually agreed and confirmed in writing by the Client and myself.
The terms of the project will cover the medium in which the proofreading/editing service will be carried out (e.g. in Word, on PDF, on paper) and how the material will be annotated (e.g. Track Changes in Word, BSI correction symbols on paper). Following my evaluation of the material to be proofread/edited and the time frame required to complete the job, a fee for the project will be based on a quotation supplied by me. The terms will also include the date by which the material will be delivered by the Client to me, and the latest date by which the completed project will be returned, following my advice to the Client.
The work will be carried out unsupervised at such times and places as determined by me, using my own equipment.
I confirm that I am self-employed, responsible for my own income tax and National Insurance contributions, and will not claim benefits granted to the Client's employees.
I am not VAT-registered.
The Client will pay me a fee per hour OR per 1000 words OR per printed page OR an agreed flat fee for the job according to prior agreement.
I agree to attend the Client's or other premises for necessary meetings, the time spent and agreed reasonable expenses incurred to be reimbursed by the Client.
The Client will reimburse me for agreed reasonable expenses (e.g. postage) over and above usual expenses incurred in the process of editorial work.
The completed work will be delivered on or before the date agreed, for the agreed fee, which will be based on the description of the work required and the brief, both supplied by the Client.
If, however, on receipt of the item to be worked on or at an early stage, it becomes apparent that significantly more work is required than had been anticipated in the preliminary discussion/brief, I may renegotiate the fee and/or the deadline.
Similarly, if, during the term of my work, additional tasks are requested by the Client, I may renegotiate the fee and/or the deadline.
If the project is lengthy, I may invoice periodically for completed stages.
All content delivered to me by the Client for the proofreading/editing project is owned by the Client. Any content created by me as part of the editorial process will become the copyright of the Client on full payment of my invoice, unless otherwise agreed.
The nature and content of the work will be kept confidential and not made known to anyone other than the Client and its contractors without prior written permission.
Unless otherwise agreed, I will supply the Client with an invoice immediately upon completion of the proofreading/editing project.
Unless otherwise agreed, payment will be made within 30 days of submission of my invoice, according to the Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998 (amended 2002 and 2013).
The Client is required to complete a booking confirmation form. This is an agreement to the contract of services between me and the Client.
A non-refundable booking fee is required to secure my proofreading/editing services under the mutually agreed-upon project terms. This will be 50% of the full agreed fee for the project for students and new clients. An invoice for the booking fee will be issued upon receipt of a completed booking confirmation form. This booking fee will be deducted from the final invoice issued when the work is completed.
The booking fee should be paid within three working days of sending the completed booking confirmation form. Receipt of payment secures my proofreading/editing services under the mutually agreed-upon project terms. If the booking fee is not received within three working days, the booking will be cancelled.
By completing and sending the booking confirmation form, the Client confirms that they have read and agreed to the terms and conditions herein. From thereon, the terms of the cancellation policy apply.
I may use the Client's name in my promotional material.
This agreement is subject to the laws of England and Wales, and both I and the Client agree to submit to the jurisdiction of the English and Welsh courts.
Student Terms & Conditions
General terms and conditions 1-24 apply.
You should seek permission from your university to use my proofreading and editing services. I will need the name and contact details of your supervisor before commencing any proofreading of your work.
This is NOT an essay-writing service. Your essay, dissertation or thesis must be your own work.
I will not alter your content, unless it’s a simple typographical error that needs correcting.
I will not advise on the content of your work, rewrite your text or reduce your word count.
I will not fact-check your work.
I cannot guarantee that your grades will be improved by using my proofreading services.
Your submission deadline is your responsibility. When booking a proofreading service, make sure you leave plenty of time to allow for a final read-through of your returned proofread document before your submission deadline is due. I take no responsibility for any missed deadlines due to the turnaround time you requested.
A non-refundable booking fee of 50% is required to secure my proofreading services under the mutually agreed-upon project terms. The remaining 50% is payable on completion. (See my general terms and conditions, number 19 for more details.)
A discount of 10% will be applied to your final invoice if you recommend a friend. The discount will ONLY be applied if that friend mentions your name when booking and proceeds with purchasing my services.
If the Client cancels the work during the proofreading/editing project, I reserve the right to invoice for 100% of the agreed fee (less the booking fee).
If the Client cancels the work prior to the proofreading/editing project commencing, but after making a booking and agreeing to the terms and conditions of service herein, I reserve the right to invoice for 100% of the agreed fee (less the booking fee) if the cancellation occurs with less than one month's notice.
If the Client wishes to cancel with more than one month's notice, the booking fee will not be refunded but no other charges will apply.
If I need to cancel the work for previously unseen circumstances (e.g. bereavement), I will contact the Client in writing at the earliest opportunity and do my best to renegotiate the time frame of the project or find an alternative supplier to carry out the work. The booking fee will be refunded.
Either the Client or myself has the right to terminate a contract for services if there is a serious breach of its terms.
